A significant step taken by GIL in the financial year 1974-75 was to
set up a Research & Development Division to provide technological
support for the contracts secured by the Company. A network of workshops
was set up in Mumbai, Delhi & Ranchi to serve as a base in the respective
regions. Apart from functioning as service centres, they are also actively
engaged in fabrication of plants on the basis of designs evolved by the
Research & Development Division.
During the initial years the R & D Division developed and fabricated
Semi-Trailers of 16 wheelers having a pay load capacity of 40 tonnes,
Bored Piling Equipment, Stiff Leg Derricks, Pneumatic sinking equipment,
Clamshell buckets, Concrete mixers, Hoists, Immersion vibrators, I.D.Cooling
tower impellers and so on. Over the years many innovative ideas were translated
in to reality by coordinated efforts to improve the efficiency and economy
in various construction activities.
